Common Signs Indicating It Is Time to See a Foot Doctor

foot doctorLet’s face it; most of us do not pay as much attention to our feet as we should. While you may have foot problems that bother you from time to time, home care and over-the-counter medications make those issues go away in a few days. If these problems linger on, that is when you may need a more in-depth checkup by a foot doctor.

When Is It Time to Schedule an Appointment with a Foot Specialist?

Here are some indicators your feet will give you when it is time to see a foot specialist, including: pain, tingling or numbness in your feet, redness or itching, soreness that prevents you from wearing your shoes, etc.

  • You Have Wounds and Sores – Wounds or open sores that will not heal on your feet should be examined by a foot doctor. This is especially true if you have diabetes, because your illness takes longer to heal. Also, the longer an open sore stays present on your foot, higher the chances are of a skin or bone infection.
  • Your Foot’s Skin is Discolored – Any type of discoloration of the skin should be looked at – especially if you notice that one foot has a reddish color to it. Redness could be an indication of gout. Blue or purple-looking tints to the skin could mean decreased blood flow.
  • You Have Pain or Swelling That Will Not Go Away – Pain and swelling occasionally is normal, as long as it goes away. If you have lingering pain or swelling of the feet, your body is telling you something. Pain could mean an underlying fracture, and not correcting that could result in long-term damage. Swelling could also indicate you have an infection, tendon rupture or severe tendonitis. Any time you have severe foot pain that lasts longer than 24 hours, you should have it examined by a foot doctor.
  • You Have Numbness, Tingling or Burning Sensation – Neuropathy can cause all three of these symptoms. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of neuropathy, but you do not have to be diabetic to get it. If you do not seek timely treatment, you could be at increased risk for foot ulcers, infections, and more.
  • You Have Painful Lumps or Bumps – Any lumps or bumps that stay in place or continue to grow and cause pain must be examined. They could be cysts or even soft-tissue tumors.
